It is very important that a puppy that is staying indoors be housebroken and trained immediately when they arrive at their new home. If the puppy is well trained, it will be loved more and you will be more satisfied with the pet. And everybody will be very happy.

Here are 10 steps I recommend to use in housebreaking your new pup

1. Keep the puppy in a pet taxi / container at night or when you are away. If the puppy is given the full roam of your home, they will explore and find a "place" to relieve themselves. Also I do not recommend letting the puppy sleep with you, until it is trained. Remember, they are learning habits that they will be doing for the rest of their lives.

2. After the puppy has slept, ate, played or once each hour which ever comes first, take the puppy out.

3. Always take the pup out the same door.

4. Always say a phrase when you are taking the pup out. "Max, out the back" for example.

5. Always take the pup to the same location when you go out. I recommend an out of the way area where the pup will not be distracted.

6. Do not talk to the pup when you take it out. It is not play time, you should discourage any play and lead them to their "site".

7. Watch the pup to be sure it does accomplish what you set out for.

8. After the pup has done it's "business". Praise the pup, let it know what a good job it has done.

9. Walk the pup back in the same door.

10. Proudly announce to the rest of the family what a good "job" your puppy did and everyone should praise the pup.

This has worked for everybody that I know. Remember consistency is the key to establishing this good habit.

If you have to leave the pup alone all day, try to get somebody that can take it out once a day and have them follow the same rules. A proper size pet taxi is a necessity for a pup that has to be left alone during the day. Of course, an outside pen is nice and will give the pup plenty of room to rest and play while you are away.
